Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the safe and efficient operation of the ferry under the direction of senior crew members.
  • Participate actively in the loading and unloading of vehicles and passengers, ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
  • Conduct routine safety checks and perform basic maintenance tasks on vessel equipment and systems.
  • Monitor vessel conditions and report any anomalies, malfunctions, or safety concerns promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment throughout the vessel.
  • Adhere strictly to all maritime regulations, company policies, and safety procedures.
  • Provide clear and courteous assistance to passengers, addressing inquiries and ensuring a positive travel experience.
  • Actively participate in all mandatory safety drills, training sessions, and emergency preparedness exercises.
  • Handle mooring lines, gangways, and other equipment as required during docking and undocking procedures.
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of emergency procedures and equipment operation.

Required Skills

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Ability to obtain relevant Transport Canada maritime certifications (e.g., Marine Emergency Duties, Bridge Watch Rating, or equivalent) within a specified timeframe.
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail and unwavering commitment to safety.
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills to interact effectively with crew and passengers.
  • Physical fitness to perform demanding tasks, including lifting, bending, climbing, and working irregular shifts in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team in a structured environment.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment medical examination and drug screening.
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in a marine, transportation, or heavy equipment operating environment (even non-professional).
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • Knowledge of local waterways and navigation around Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.
