Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) for foreign students with special needs.
  • Provide direct instruction and adapt general education curriculum to meet diverse learning styles and cultural backgrounds.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instructional strategies accordingly.
  • Collaborate with parents, general education teachers, support staff, and external agencies to ensure holistic student support.
  • Integrate culturally responsive teaching practices to foster an inclusive and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Utilize assistive technologies and other resources to support student learning and engagement.
  • Facilitate communication and understanding between foreign students, their families, and the school community.
  • Participate in school-wide professional development, with a focus on special education and multiculturalism.
  • Maintain accurate records of student performance, progress, and services provided.
  • Advocate for the academic and social-emotional needs of foreign students within the school system.

Required Skills

  • Valid British Columbia Teaching Certificate with Special Education qualification.
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing IEPs.
  • Strong understanding of various special education methodologies and interventions.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on cultural sensitivity.
  • Proficiency in assessing student learning and adapting instructional materials.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine passion for supporting students with diverse needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Special Education, Multicultural Education, or a related field.
  • Fluency in a second language commonly spoken by foreign student populations in Richmond (e.g., Mandarin, Cantonese, Punjabi, Korean).
  • Experience working with English Language Learners (ELL) with special needs.
  • Knowledge of Canadian immigration and settlement services relevant to families with special needs children.
  • Certification in specific special education programs (e.g., ABA, Orton-Gillingham).
