Job Description

We are seeking a proactive and dedicated Attendance Officer to join a vibrant school community in Selly Oak, Birmingham. This is an exceptional opportunity to play a pivotal role in ensuring students achieve their full potential by promoting and monitoring excellent attendance. As the Attendance Officer, you will be the first point of contact for attendance-related queries, working closely with students, parents/guardians, and staff to identify barriers to attendance and implement effective strategies to overcome them. Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor daily student attendance, investigate absences, and follow up with parents/guardians.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date attendance records using the school's Management Information System (MIS) such as SIMS or Arbor.
  • Produce regular attendance reports for senior leadership, identifying trends and areas for intervention.
  • Liaise with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external agencies to address persistent attendance concerns.
  • Implement and enforce the school's attendance policy, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and safeguarding procedures.
  • Conduct home visits where necessary and appropriate, in line with school policy and safeguarding protocols.
  • Provide advice and support to parents/guardians on attendance matters, promoting the importance of regular school attendance.
  • Assist with the enrolment and transfer of students, ensuring attendance records are seamlessly managed.
  • Contribute to a positive school ethos that encourages and celebrates good attendance.

Required Skills

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with students, parents, and staff.
  • Strong organisational skills and attention to detail, particularly in record-keeping and data management.
  • Proficiency in using IT systems, particularly school MIS software (e.g., SIMS, Arbor) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy school environment.
  • A empathetic and resilient approach, capable of handling sensitive situations with discretion.
  • Understanding of safeguarding principles and child protection procedures.
  • Proven ability to manage time effectively and prioritise workload under pressure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working as an Attendance Officer or in a similar administrative role within an educational setting.
  • Relevant NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in administration, education, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of local authority attendance procedures and statutory guidance.
