Job Description

An Environmental Health Officer (EHO) plays a critical role in safeguarding public health and ensuring environmental protection within our community. This pivotal position involves implementing and enforcing a wide range of environmental health regulations and standards to minimize health risks and promote sustainable practices. As an EHO, you will be on the front lines, conducting inspections, investigations, and educational outreach to foster compliance and educate the public on best practices. Your work will directly contribute to a healthier, safer Dorval, covering areas from food safety and waste management to water quality and air pollution control. Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive inspections of various establishments (e.g., restaurants, industrial sites, public facilities) to ensure compliance with environmental health laws and regulations.
  • Investigate complaints related to public health nuisances, environmental pollution, foodborne illnesses, and hazardous materials.
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to businesses, residents, and government agencies on environmental health best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare detailed reports, enforcement notices, and legal documentation related to inspections and investigations.
  • Develop and deliver educational programs and outreach initiatives to promote environmental health awareness and compliance.
  • Monitor and assess water quality, air quality, and waste management systems, recommending corrective actions as needed.
  • Collaborate with other departments, agencies, and emergency services during public health emergencies or environmental incidents.
  • Stay abreast of current environmental health legislation, scientific advancements, and industry best practices.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience as an Environmental Health Officer or in a similar regulatory compliance role.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and municipal environmental health legislation and standards (e.g., Quebec's environmental quality act, food safety regulations).
  • Proven ability to conduct thorough inspections and investigations, interpret complex data, and enforce regulations effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and French.
  • Proficiency in using standard office software and specialized environmental health monitoring tools.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a reliable vehicle for fieldwork.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Environmental Health or Public Health.
  • Professional certification (e.g., Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors (CIPHI) Certification).
  • Experience with risk assessment methodologies and environmental impact evaluations.
  • Demonstrated experience in public outreach, education, and community engagement.
  • Familiarity with GIS software for environmental mapping and data analysis.
