This role requires a keen eye for detail, a strong work ethic, and a genuine interest in marine biology and conservation. You’ll spend significant time outdoors, often in varying weather conditions and sometimes in remote locations, working both on land and potentially on vessels. Daily tasks will include assisting with the deployment and retrieval of sampling gear, processing biological samples (e.g., measuring fish, taking tissue samples), meticulous data collection and entry into specialized databases, and ensuring the proper maintenance and calibration of all field and laboratory equipment. Key Responsibilities
- Assist with the deployment, retrieval, and maintenance of various fisheries sampling gear (e.g., nets, traps, hydrophones).
- Process biological samples, including measuring, weighing, and identifying fish and other aquatic organisms.
- Collect and accurately record field data, ensuring precision and integrity in data entry into digital databases.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration of field and laboratory equipment.
- Support vessel operations, including preparing equipment, navigating, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.
- Conduct basic laboratory procedures for sample analysis.
- Adhere strictly to all health, safety, and environmental regulations and standard operating procedures.
- Participate in habitat assessments and environmental monitoring activities.
- Contribute to data validation and quality control processes.
Required Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Demonstrated interest in marine biology, fisheries science, or environmental conservation.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and recording.
- Physical stamina and ability to perform demanding tasks in various weather conditions (e.g., lifting, standing, bending).
- Basic computer proficiency for data entry and communication.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Valid Class 5 (or equivalent) driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
- Post-secondary education (diploma or degree) in Marine Biology, Fisheries, Environmental Science, or a related field.
- Previous experience (paid or volunteer) in field research, fisheries, or aquaculture operations.
- Basic First Aid and CPR certification.
- Marine Emergency Duties (MED A3 or higher) certification.
- Experience with GPS units, sonar, or other marine technology equipment.
- Knowledge of local fish species and marine ecosystems in Atlantic Canada.
