Job Description

Delta Corporation is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Metal Lathe Technician to join our dynamic engineering and maintenance team at our Marondera facility. In this crucial role, you will be instrumental in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our extensive production machinery by manufacturing, repairing, and modifying precision components. Your day-to-day will involve operating conventional and potentially CNC lathes, meticulously interpreting complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to transform raw materials into finished parts with exacting tolerances. This position demands a meticulous eye for detail, a strong understanding of various metal properties (such as steel, brass, aluminum, and cast iron), and a comprehensive grasp of machining processes, including turning, facing, threading, boring, and tapering. You will be expected to perform regular machine maintenance, calibrate equipment, and troubleshoot any operational issues to ensure consistent output quality and adherence to strict safety protocols.

As a key member of our maintenance workshop, you will collaborate closely with maintenance engineers, fitters, and other technicians. Your contributions will directly impact machine uptime, production efficiency, and overall operational excellence, playing a vital role in preventing costly breakdowns and extending the lifespan of our critical assets. Key Responsibilities

  • Operate, set up, and program conventional and CNC metal lathes to perform precision machining operations (turning, boring, drilling, milling, threading, etc.).
  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpieces.
  • Select and set up appropriate cutting tools, attachments, and feeds/speeds for various materials (e.g., steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, cast iron).
  • Inspect finished components for conformity to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges.
  • Perform routine maintenance on lathes and associated equipment, including lubrication, cleaning, and minor repairs, to ensure optimal performance.
  • Troubleshoot machining problems and make necessary adjustments to machine controls or tooling.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, adhering strictly to all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineers, fitters, and other workshop personnel to address specific part requirements and contribute to design improvements.
  • Document work performed, including time spent, materials used, and any adjustments made.
  • Assist in material handling and inventory management related to machining operations.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience as a Metal Lathe Technician or Machinist.
  • Strong proficiency in operating conventional metal lathes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and schematics.
  • Expertise in using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, depth gauges, etc.).
  • Solid understanding of machining principles, cutting tools, materials, and tolerances.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety protocols and procedures.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Good communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Trade Certificate or National Certificate in Machine Shop Engineering, Fitting & Turning, or a related field.
  • Experience with CNC lathe programming and operation (e.g., G-code, M-code).
  • Knowledge of various welding techniques.
  • Prior experience in a high-volume manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Familiarity with preventative maintenance schedules for machinery.
