Job Description

We are actively seeking an experienced and highly motivated Quantity Surveyor to join our robust team, with an immediate start available. Based in Smethwick, Birmingham, this full-time position offers a unique opportunity to play a pivotal role in the successful delivery of diverse construction projects from inception to completion. You will be instrumental in managing all commercial aspects, ensuring financial control, mitigating risks, and maximizing value for our clients. You will be responsible for preparing detailed cost plans, tender documentation, and valuations, alongside managing variations and final accounts. Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare comprehensive cost plans, feasibility studies, and budget estimates for projects.
  • Manage the tendering process, including preparing tender documents, analysing bids, and making recommendations.
  • Negotiate and agree on contract terms with contractors and suppliers, ensuring favourable outcomes.
  • Administer construction contracts, including performing valuations, processing payments, and finalising accounts.
  • Identify, analyse, and mitigate commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle to protect project viability.
  • Prepare and submit accurate valuations for interim payments and final accounts.
  • Manage variations, claims, and disputes efficiently, ensuring fair and timely resolution.
  • Provide expert advice on contractual matters and cost control strategies to project teams and stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate financial records and prepare regular, detailed cost reports for senior management.
  • Collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, architects, engineers, and other project stakeholders to foster strong working relationships and ensure project success.

Required Skills

  • Proven experience (minimum 3 years) as a Quantity Surveyor within the UK construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of various forms of construction contracts (e.g., JCT, NEC) and their application.
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proficiency in cost estimation, budgeting, and financial reporting with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritise tasks, and consistently meet deadlines.
  • High level of accuracy and a methodical approach to all commercial documentation.
  • Competency in relevant software including MS Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and specialist QS software.
  • Full UK driving license and willingness to travel to various project sites within the region.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or a related construction discipline (e.g., Commercial Management).
  • MRICS chartership or actively working towards professional accreditation.
  • Experience with a diverse range of project types (e.g., commercial, residential, education, infrastructure).
  • Demonstrated experience working specifically within the West Midlands construction market.
  • Advanced knowledge of value engineering and cost-saving initiatives.
