Job Description
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Farm Labour Supervisor to join our dynamic team in Ha Lejone, Leribe. This critical role involves overseeing daily farm operations, ensuring the efficient management of our farm labour force, and maintaining the highest standards of productivity and crop quality across all stages of production. The successful candidate will be a hands-on leader, capable of inspiring and guiding a team to achieve agricultural excellence while adhering strictly to company protocols and safety standards. You will be instrumental in implementing daily and weekly work plans, monitoring progress against targets, and ensuring that all farming activities, from land preparation and planting to irrigation, pest management, harvesting, and post-harvest handling, are conducted safely, effectively, and in accordance with company policies and best agricultural practices. This position requires a keen eye for detail, strong organizational skills, and a genuine passion for farming and team leadership. The supervisor will also be responsible for maintaining accurate records, managing resources, and reporting to farm management on a regular basis. Your contribution will directly impact our yield, quality, and overall operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise, train, and motivate a team of farm labourers, ensuring optimal performance, adherence to work schedules, and high morale.
- Plan and organize daily and weekly farm tasks, including planting, irrigation, weeding, fertilization, pest and disease control, harvesting, and post-harvest handling.
- Monitor crop health and growth cycles, identify potential issues such as diseases or pests, and implement appropriate solutions in consultation with farm management.
- Ensure proper operation, routine maintenance, and safe use of all farm machinery, tools, and equipment by the labour force.
- Maintain accurate records of labour hours, materials used, crop yields, input applications, and other relevant farm data for reporting.
- Enforce strict adherence to all health and safety regulations and company policies, promoting a safe working environment for all staff.
- Conduct regular quality checks on produce during harvesting and packaging to ensure it meets established company standards for market readiness.
- Provide regular and comprehensive reports on farm activities, labour performance, crop status, and progress to farm management.
- Assist in the evaluation and implementation of new farming techniques, technologies, and practices to improve efficiency and productivity.
- Manage inventory of farm supplies (seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, tools) and report needs to management to ensure continuous operations without disruption.
Required Skills
- Proven experience (minimum 3 years) in farm labour supervision, preferably within a commercial fresh produce or horticulture environment.
- Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate, instruct, and guide diverse teams effectively.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, fluent in both Sesotho and English.
- Comprehensive practical knowledge of crop cultivation, irrigation systems, soil management, pest management, and harvesting techniques.
- Ability to operate and perform basic troubleshooting and maintenance on various farm machinery and equipment.
- Good organizational and problem-solving abilities, with a keen eye for detail and a proactive approach.
- Physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions.
- Thorough knowledge of health and safety regulations specific to agricultural operations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Diploma or Certificate in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agronomy, or a related field.
- Experience with specific crops commonly cultivated in the Lesotho region (e.g., leafy greens, potatoes, maize, legumes).
- Valid driver’s license with proven experience driving farm vehicles and utility vehicles.
- Basic computer literacy, including proficiency in using spreadsheets for record-keeping and reporting.
- First Aid certification and knowledge of emergency procedures.
