Key Responsibilities
- Perform a comprehensive range of diagnostic tests on biological samples (blood, tissue, urine, etc.) using established protocols.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate highly sophisticated laboratory equipment, ensuring optimal performance and troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Accurately record, analyse, and interpret test results, identifying abnormalities and escalating critical findings to senior scientists or clinical staff.
- Maintain rigorous quality control and assurance procedures, participating in internal and external quality assurance schemes.
- Adhere strictly to health and safety regulations, laboratory policies, and national accreditation standards (e.g., UKAS ISO 15189).
- Contribute to the development and implementation of new tests, technologies, and methodologies within the laboratory.
- Collaborate effectively with pathologists, clinicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.
- Participate in ongoing professional development activities, including training, workshops, and continuing education.
- Manage laboratory stock, ensure efficient use of reagents and consumables, and maintain a clean and organised working environment.
- Undertake competency assessments and maintain an up-to-date professional portfolio.
Required Skills
- BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science or equivalent, acceptable for HCPC registration.
- Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Biomedical Scientist, or demonstrable eligibility to apply for HCPC registration for international candidates.
- Minimum of 3 years post-registration experience working in a clinical diagnostic laboratory.
- Proficiency in a range of laboratory techniques relevant to haematology, microbiology, immunology, or biochemistry.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong understanding of laboratory quality management systems and patient confidentiality.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex information clearly.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- MSc in a relevant Biomedical Science discipline.
- Completion of a specialist portfolio (e.g., IBMS Specialist Diploma) in a specific discipline.
- Experience with Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) and advanced analytical software.
- Participation in audit or service improvement projects.
- Previous experience mentoring or training junior staff.
