Job Description

Career.zycto is seeking a dedicated and experienced Archaeologist to join our dynamic team in Kerrisdale, Vancouver. This is an exceptional opportunity for an English-speaking professional to contribute to significant archaeological projects across British Columbia, focusing on both pre-contact and historical sites. As an Archaeologist with our firm, you will play a crucial role in all phases of archaeological resource management, from initial field assessments and surveys to complex excavations and detailed reporting.

Your work will be vital in identifying, documenting, and protecting archaeological sites in compliance with provincial and federal heritage legislation. This includes undertaking extensive fieldwork in varied terrains and weather conditions, meticulously recording findings using modern techniques, and processing artifacts in a laboratory setting. You will be responsible for preparing comprehensive archaeological impact assessments, mitigation plans, and final reporting, ensuring that all documentation is clear, accurate, and adheres to regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct archaeological field surveys, impact assessments, and monitoring programs.
  • Oversee and participate in archaeological excavations, ensuring adherence to methodological standards.
  • Document archaeological findings meticulously through field notes, mapping, photography, and digital recording.
  • Process, catalog, and analyze artifacts and ecofacts in a laboratory setting.
  • Prepare comprehensive archaeological reports, including impact assessments, mitigation plans, and final excavation reports, in clear and concise English.
  • Ensure all project activities comply with federal, provincial (e.g., BC Heritage Conservation Act), and local heritage legislation and guidelines.
  • Collaborate effectively with Indigenous communities, clients, government agencies, and interdisciplinary project teams.
  • Operate and maintain field equipment, including GPS, total stations, and excavation tools.
  • Contribute to project planning, scheduling, and budget management.
  • Participate in community engagement and public outreach initiatives as required.

Required Skills

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in archaeological fieldwork and laboratory analysis.
  • Proficiency in archaeological field methods, excavation techniques, and artifact identification.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English, essential for reporting and stakeholder engagement.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Familiarity with GIS software and archaeological database management.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently with minimal supervision.
  • Physical fitness and ability to work in challenging outdoor conditions for extended periods.
  • Knowledge of Canadian archaeology, particularly the cultural heritage of British Columbia.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and a clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Archaeology or a related discipline.
  • Experience with specific cultural periods or types of archaeological sites in British Columbia.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Experience with remote sensing technologies (e.g., LiDAR, GPR).
  • Familiarity with Indigenous cultural protocols and engagement practices.
  • Experience in environmental consulting or cultural resource management.
  • Professional registration or eligibility for registration with a relevant archaeological association.
