Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain horticultural programs for various urban and community green spaces.
  • Select appropriate plant species (including native and climate-resilient varieties) for Yellowknife's unique subarctic environment.
  • Design and execute landscape plans, considering aesthetics, ecological function, and site-specific conditions.
  • Manage all aspects of plant health, including soil analysis, fertilization, pest and disease identification, and integrated pest management (IPM).
  • Oversee irrigation systems, ensuring efficient water use and plant hydration.
  • Conduct regular inspections of plant material and landscapes, performing necessary pruning, weeding, and general upkeep.
  • Source and procure plant materials, tools, and equipment from local or regional suppliers.
  • Collaborate with urban planners, architects, and community stakeholders on new green infrastructure projects.
  • Provide guidance and training to junior staff, volunteers, and community members on horticultural best practices.
  • Maintain accurate records of plant inventory, maintenance activities, and project progress.
  • Contribute to the development of sustainability initiatives and environmental education programs.

Required Skills

  • Diploma or Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Botany, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in horticultural management or landscape maintenance.
  • Strong knowledge of northern plant ecology, plant identification, and plant pathology.
  • Proficiency in landscape design principles and software (e.g., AutoCAD, SketchUp, or similar).
  • Demonstrated experience with irrigation systems installation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management (IPM) techniques.
  • Ability to operate and maintain various horticultural equipment and tools safely.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Physical ability to perform demanding outdoor work in varying weather conditions.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in cold climates or subarctic environments.
  • Certification as a Certified Horticultural Technician (CHT) or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with native plant species of the Northwest Territories.
  • Project management experience in landscape or green space development.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license with a clean driving record.
